Customers using the new Car Park West won't think twice about how it came to be there. It will be just another distress purchase, though hopefully one that isn't distressing for them to use," says David Rebello, BAA project leader for Car Park West, reflecting on the progress made to date on this major parking infrastructure project at Heathrow airport. "In fact, all the distress was on us when we embarked on the design and construction of the car park, considering the constraints and obstacles that had to be overcome in its building." The driving public who start using Car Park West next summer will be blissfully unaware of the massive civil engineering feat that was required just to create the car park's foundations. "Instead of looking at this as a five-storey, 1,580-space car park, think of an iceberg, a third of which is above the waterline and ponder the problematic two-thirds that lie below it," says Rebello. "Then consider that what is below this waterline has absolutely nothing to do with the car park construction or operation itself. That is the scale of the problems that came with the territory."
