BACKGROUND: Water and energy are two non separable utilities, which are absolute necessities for human sustenance. The nature has endowed the planet earth with plenty of water and many forms of energy but only about 1 % of this water is fresh and can be used for drinking purposes where as all forms of energy are yet to be tapped fully. Effective innovations and integration of various resources are required to generate power and water. Confronting the water & energy related challenges are essential to a country for sustainable development. Desalination is the one alternative to create new water resources in the midst of water crisis and water scarcity. Energy on the other hand is at the heart of the environment and economy interface. Virtually every environmental issue-from a local garbage dump to deterioration of the global climate - has an energy component. The imperative of sustainable development requires to not only address the environmental deterioration associated with unsustainable energy use, but also to address the global socio-economic inequalities which are often the root cause of global conflicts involving energy supplies.
