HISTOPATHOLOGY OF JUJUBE (ZIZYPHUS MAURITIANA LAM.) ROOTS INFECTED WITH MEWIDOGYNE JAVANICA

Histopathological studies revealed that Meloidogyne javanica larvae penetrated roots of jujube by a puncturing action of the stylet and caused giant cell formation. Massive cell bodies formation was observed. Egg masses were also observed on infectedroots. Nematode damage to root cells resulted in killing of feeder roots and ultimately effected plant growth.Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949 is a common parasite of several plants throughout the world (Sasser, 1979). This parasite has been reported from Pakistan from a number of hosts including tomato, okra, rice, fig, cauliflower, brinjal, maize, banana, papaya, citrus, soybean, sugarcane, pomegranate, onion, tobacco, etc. (Maqbool & Shahina, 1995, 2001; Khan, 1991; Khan et al., 2005; Khan & Shaukat, 1999; Islam et al., 1996). Jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lam.) is a widely grown crop in lower Sindh, Pakistan, which is known to be infected with ecto and endoparasitic nematodes (Khan et al., 2004). In the present study histopathology of jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lam.) roots infected with Meloidogyne javanica is being reported.
