Rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola Golden & Birclifield, 1965 can cause economic yield loss in upland, lowland and deepwater rice. In upland rice, there is an estimated reduction of 2.6 percent in grain yield for every 1000 nematodes present around young seedlings. The population levels which cause 10 percent loss in yield of upland rice are 120, 250 and 600 eggs/plant at 10, 30 and 60 days age of plants in direct seeded crops (Rao et al., 1986). Rice root-knot nematode is reported fromIndia by Rao et al., (1970) and from Bangladesh by Page et al., (1979). In Pakistan, during surveys of Sheikhiipura district of Punjab province having rice-wheat cropping system, in 2000, the rice roots were observed with typical root-knot swelling (Fig. 1. A-B) and were identified as Meloidogyne graminicola (Golden & Birchfield, 1965). The roots were found infested with rice root-knot nematode on volunteer seedlings in the wheat field as well.
