Bacteria as Natural Syringe to Deliver Proteins

In parallel to efforts to develop and improve vectors for gene therapy, there is an increasing need for new vectors to deliver therapeutic proteins into target cells. Gram-negative bacteria have evolved a protein secretion apparatus called the type III secretion system, allowing translocation of effectors directly into the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. Here we propose to take advantage of this system to screen for anti-tumoural antigens and epitopes.
