The steel industry is presented with ever fiercer competition characterised by short delivery times coupled with ever smaller sales volumes, decreasing lot sizes and growing product diversity. At the same time new e-technologies are calling for a process-oriented restructuring of the IT landscape. The trend is towards networked structures along the complete value creation chain. Within this context modern, integrated production planning represents the core competence of a company. Production planning has to meet a great variety of demands thus being addressed as the central element of a supply chain.
