Inhomogeneous automation concepts for complex daisy chain plants such as the Beta-plant

During the course of its historical development the Beta-plant has been modernised and extended in different parts by means of investments. In this way a very complex, inhomogeneous automation landscape has evolved over the last thirty years. Suitable concepts have been developed and realised to large extent to ensure not only good maintenance in the case of disturbance but also quick and flexible reactions to the needs and wants of production.Past development has led to four generations of technical equipment standing next to each other. The situation in control is similar: Next to the most innovative digital systems with the possibility of online changes there is still discrete control technology for which every additional logical link requires the installation of a new electronic card. Due to the historical development of the plant there are now 11 different systems for information technology. It has proved to be extremely useful in many areas to install, project and commission sufficient reserve capacity straight away. This additional capacity needs then only be filled with life as required. Costs for such installed reserves are usually very low.
