Around the world there is a trend towards steelmaking in electric arc furnaces. The "raw-material-related" reasons for the expansion of electric steelmaking include the energy potential presented byscrap as a raw material, its chiefly low price, its good availability in most regions of the world, and thenecessity to recycle scrap. Furthermore, the operative capability and, consequently, the productivityand cost-efficiency of electric arc furnaces have risen quite extraordinarily over the past few years.Another advantage is that the steelmaking costs of electric arc furnace steel plants are not so heavilydependent on the rate of capacity utilisation.
