In a coke oven byproduct plant with a gas treatment plant there is a formation of a process water. This process water consists of surplus water from the tar separation as well as effluent from the NH_3-/H_2S-scrubber. At HKM, the former Mannesmann Huttenwerke in Duisburg-Huckingen, a coke plant was commissioned in 1959 for the first time. This plant started with phenosolvan process facilities for eliminating the toxic phenol from the surplus water by producing raw phenol oil. The further preparation of the process water is made by steam distillation in ammonia-still and deacidifier. After more than 40 years of operation time the dephenolic plant was to be renewed. Because of year-old and often intensified requirements to the waste water, HKM made the decision for an innovative erection of a biological wastewater treatment plant. The following report describes the basic steps of the process, the plant design as well as construction and commissioning of the plant. First results are presented.
