Surface finishing plays an important role in the metal processing industry. Galvanised strips are coated on both sides with one or more paint layers to get desired surface properties like colour, corrosion resistance and so on. The strips are then processed into, e.g., washing machines, electrical control cabinets, car parts, etc. therefore, lacquer has to fulfil certain requirements regarding adherence on the galvanised strip, resistance against environmental impact and colour. Beside other parameters, the uniformity of the lacquer profile is a determining factor for the lacquer quality. This contribution presents a new system for automatic control of colour-coating lines. It is shown how to reduce lacquer-profile variations and therefore the lacquer consumption in colour-coating lines using this advanced control system. The article also contains a brief overview of the colour-coating technology and a description of the developed mathematical models.
