The steel industry in Germany and Western Europe can be satisfied with the start into the new year. In 2002 the prices for some products and steel grades could be significantly increased. The reasons for this positive trend are the completed concentration process in the Western European steel industry and the fact that almost all government-owned steel works in Western Europe are now in private ownership. Moreover, unlike the steel producers in the USA with their frequently outdated facilities, almost all steel products, as has become clear at the 7th Annual Handelblatt Conference for the steel industry in Dusseldorf on 18 and 19 February 2003.
