Pollock fishermen scramble to solve Chinook bycatch problem

On the eve of the Bering Sea pollock A season, pollock fishermen and industry representatives met in Dutch Harbor to continue to work on solutions to the problem of salmon bycatch in the fishery. The meetings were headed by John Graver, interco-op manager for the American Fisheries Act catcher vessel fleet. Chinook bycatch numbers for the Bering Sea trawl fishery have climbed alarmingly in the past two years, and the fleet is under pressure from Western Alaskan salmon fishermen to get control of thesituation.
