Bruce Steele Steps Up: A fisherman's solution for acidification

Bruce Steele has never been known for ducking big problems or hard work. A 35-year veteran of commercial fisheries on the West Coast, he spent years battling the reintroduction of shellfish-depleting sea otters to waters he knows well as a member of the Sea Urchin Advisory Committee to the California Department of Fish and Game. A few years ago he acquired a farm in Buellton, Calif., where he supplements his fishing income by single-handedly raising six acres of vegetables. He delivers most of them to high-end restaurants in the Santa Ynez Valley outside Santa Barbara.
