Pink plea: In September, Alaska Gov. Bill Walker wrote U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker seeking federal disaster relief in connection with this year's poor pink salmon catches. The request included two of the state's major pink salmon harvest areas - Prince William Sound and Kodiak. It also included two minor areas - Lower Cook Inlet and Chignik. The governor's request raised some eyebrows in that it didn't include Southeast Alaska, another major pink salmon area where commercial fishermen likewise had a lousy season. At the urging of some state legislators, Walker reconsidered and on Oct. 26 sent another letter to Pritzker asking that the 2016 Southeast Alaska pink salmon fishery be added to the request for disaster relief.
