Iced crab: The 2009 opilio crab season got off to an icy start this year. By early January, the sea ice extended farther south than it has in more than 30 years. The harbor at St. Paul Island began freezing up just as the processing plants were preparing to start accepting deliveries of northern shares of crab quota. The St. Paul harbor master, Jason Merculef, said that part of the ice problem stems from crab rationalization. With fewer boats entering the harbor, the ice builds up faster and harder.This year, the harbor didn't have a tug at the beginning of the season to help break it up, either.
