Pollock catch cut again, but 2010 looks brighter

The pollock total allowable catch took another cut this year. It dropped 18 percent from 1 million tons in 2008 to 815,000 tons in 2009. NOAA scientists attributed the cuts to a downturn in the natural population cycle and said that the stocks were not crashing. Fishery management biologist Jim lanelli said that adult pollock numbers were low but that the younger year classes appeared strong. In fact, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's Science and Statistical Committee recommended an increase in the quota for 2010, up to 1.23 million tons, though that will not be set until next year.
