At the 50th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Unagi (The Eel), directed by Shohei Imamura of Japan, shared the Palme d'Or with The Taste of Cherry, a work directed by Abbas Kiarostami of Iran. The Japanese director has thus become the fourth man ever — and the first Japanese — to twice win the most prestigious prize of the famous international film festival. He won his first Golden Palm back in 1983 with The Ballad of Naravama.
