Old boat, older values make southeast seiner a success

The F/V Alaskan was fishing before Larry Dontos was born. Not that Dontos is terribly young now. He started as a deckhand for his dad aboard the F/V St. Francis in 1963. By then, the Alaskan was pushing 30. Dontos graduated to the wheelhouse in 1973,when he ran the Souvenir for Whitney-Fidalgo in Southeast. Over the following 36 seasons, Dontos has gone through many boats and gained the calm assurance that comes from experience — and from a family heritage of fishing. "Most important is that I make the minimum amount of money to keep my family going for a year. I need to fill up the coffers," Dontos said.
