Cook Inlet clash: Over the protests of commercial fishermen, the Alaska Legislature in April voted to form a Cook Inlet Salmon Task Force. More than half the state's population is clustered around the inlet, and it's long been a battleground for commercial and sport fishermen. The five senators and five representatives on the task force will look at "conservation issues" and ways to reduce "allocative conflict" in Cook Inlet, including a possible buyout of commercial gillnetters. The group will report back to the Legislature in January 2009.
