Located in LaConner, Wash., Maritime Fabrications opens a satellite shop in Naknek May 1 through Aug. 1 each year. Back home, it is part of LaConner Maritime Service. There is a full-service repair yard, with two Travelifts that can lift up to 80 tonsand vessels 82 by 25 feet, according to General Manager Isaac Oczkewicz. Although Maritime Fabrications handles pleasure craft, it is starting to build a new line of commercial fishing boats. Two gillnetters will be built initially, followed by three crabbers and one longliner. A seiner will be launched in 2013. The yard will follow lines it built in the 1980s, "except larger," Oczkewicz said. The yard also builds deck equipment — anchor winches, for example. And refits bring in a lot of business. "You can rebuild a boat pretty throughout for less than half the price of a new one. Guys get comfortable with an existing platform, and we can keep all that and add lots of value," Oczkewicz said.
