Yet another salmon meeting: Twenty fisheries scientists meeting in early December to examine the collapsed Fraser River sockeye runs in 2009 concluded that the problem occurred after the juvenile fish began their migration toward the sea. After a spawning escapement of 3.3 miliion in 2005 and a huge number of smolts leaving their lake systems in 2007, scientists forecast 10.6 million sockeye would return to the Fraser. Instead the run amounted to a mere 1.4 million, the weakest in more than 50 years.
