摘要

The Alaska Board of Fisheries in December narrowly rejected a proposal to relax the 32-foot length limit on drift gillnet boats participating in the huge Bristol Bay sockeye salmon fishery. While the proposal is dead for now, it ignited what promisesto be a persistent debate over the fishery's soul - that is, who will profit from Bristol Bay, and how the fishery can best reach its elusive goal of improved product quality. Proposal 15, offered by driftnetter Erick Sabo of Tacoma, would have done away with the longstanding 32-foot vessel length limit.
