Sunken vessel found, sardines show, gillnet ban fought

Sardines: Up in the air and out on the water, industry-sponsored sardine surveying came to a close off the coasts of Oregon and Washington in late September. The final fishing period of the year began on Sept. 15. The West Coast quota for 2012 was nearly 110,000 metric tons, more than twice last year's quota. Until now, the number hadn't been above 100,000 since 2007. This was the fourth year that the industry was allowed to survey sardine populations off the Northwest coast. Before, the total allowable catch was based on federal estimates of spawners in California — a distant and unreliable indicator.
