Built for kings: dory builder's art gets a new infusion as trollers rebound

"There used to be a bunch of us," says Oregon dory fisherman Mike Dixon. "We'd trailer our boats down to Winchester Bay and then maybe to Coos Bay. We could be down there one day, then get word that fishing was good up in Newport, Pacific City, or even Garibaldi. So we'd take off and be there ready to fish the next morning." By 1990, however, depleted salmon runs and government regulation had reduced the commercial dory fleet to less than a quarter of the 350 fishermen who once worked up and down the coast and launched through the surf at Pacific City (see sidebar page 36). The recent return of record runs off the West Coast, however, has encouraged some to dust off their salmon gear and get back in the game. A few have even been optimistic enoughto order new 22-foot plywood dories from Terry Learned in Cloverdale, Oregon.
