THE FIRST manned space capsule in human history was launched in 1961 by the former Soviet Union. Eight years later, in 1969, the United States of America successfully landed the first man on the moon.Space exploration from the 1960s through the 1980s was extremely competitive, and the United States ad the former Soviet Union staked their national prestige on the "space race." To be first over the finish line in the vast frontier of outer space was proof of a country's super-power status. In order to compete, both the United States and the former Soviet Union established their own independent research activities. Through this research, both countries were able to assemble the necessary space-related technology and skills with incredible speed.
