Pachinko is a typically Japanese leisure activity. It is like pinball, where a little steel ball is flicked with the finger, travels across a board studded with nails and other obstacles, and scores by dropping into a hole. In pachinko, if a player islucky enough to have a ball fall in the hole, more balls tumble out of the machine. Shops with such machines first became a serious presence in Osaka some 70 years ago. For pachinko fans the ultimate thrill is the jangling sound of cascading balls whenthey hit a lucky hole.
