Our jeep wound through the Hindu Kush mountains until, some three hours after leaving the town of Chitral, the village where Akiko Wada lives finally came into view. Wada was in her home located near the center of the village. We found her doing her wash using an old-style washboard. "This is a virtually self-sufficient village. Electricity has only recently been introduced. There is no tap water, so we have to draw it from the river. But I've never regarded this as hardship. If I thought it was hardship, I would have left the Rumbul valley a long time ago."
