Efficiency is the buzzword in trawl innovations these days as equipment manufacturers race to improve both catch and fuel efficiency in both net and door design. Dan Oliver at NET Systems on Bain-bridge Island, Wash., says his company has been workingwith some of the bottom trawl vessels on an old concept, twin cod ends on a single trawl. "The advancement in technology now includes a double-belly bottom trawl that provides greater catch efficiency and the twin cod ends enhance the quality of the catch by reducing pressure at haul-back," Oliver says.
