It has been a deadly winter for commercial fishermen in the Pacific Northwest. It may have started with Dungeness crab season, when Randi, a Charleston-based crab boat, sank about three miles north of the Coos Bay Jetty, losing its skipper. From there, the picture has only gotten bleaker as crabbers, draggers, tribal fishermen, and even a fisheries observer have lost their lives. By the end of March, 2012 was already the deadliest year off the Oregon and Washington coast in six years — seven peopledied in commercial fishing accidents.
