摘要

It was late autumn in Southeast Alaska. A storm was developing as three members of the Odegaard family left the dock in Petersburg. The weather in the Southeast panhandle is notoriously lousy in the fall. Cold, horizontal rain typically lashes the region, and heavy seas are the norm. But it's also when red king crab are harvested, and on a Sunday afternoon in November 1999, the Odegaards — a longtime Petersburg fishing family — took to the seas to try to get their catch. According to press accounts at the time, the weather worsened dramatically as James Odegaard, his son Eric, 25, and his daughter, Renee, 22, transited north toward Seymour Canal aboard their 46-foot fishing vessel, The Mistress.
