The future of Coast Guard buoys is changing from steel to foam whenever feasible. Foam buoys are smaller, require less sinker weight and lighter chain, and will float if damaged, even when parted in two. "Foam buoys are used as applications allow. Ifa foam buoy serves the purpose and can hold up under the conditions, then we use them," said the Coast Guard's Doug Cameron. "We have them on the Columbia River at Cathlamet, Tongue Point, and Chinook. There are 10 foam buoys on the Willamette River in Oregon, and we use them in Puget Sound and at the mouth of the Siuslaw River.
