For the Copper River/Prince William Sound Marketing Association, marketing begins on the deck. The organization's first goal is to improve quality of fish sold under the brand, said Beth Poole, executive director of the association. The Copper River/PWS association isn't alone. The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association also has targeted product quality as its first goal. The Copper River/PWS group actually is the oldest regional seafood development association in Alaska. The state established the framework for such self-sufficient marketing associations in 2005, when fishermen's 1 percent contributions to the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute ended.
