AN EVENING WITH CHEMIST AND RENAISSANCE MAN, ROALD HOFFMANN

Roald Hoffmann, a professor at Cornell University and winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, spoke at the Chicago ACS September meeting at Loyola University in front of a sold out crowd of several hundred. The lecture was titled "More About Mme. Lavoisier than M. Lavoisief and told the story of the discovery of oxygen, highlighting the role of Madame Lavoisier. Professor Hoffmann started his lecture with a portrait of the Lavoisiers by the neoclassical painter, David. The painting is life-sized with Madame Lavoisier in the center, standing tall, leaning in to the seated Monsieur Lavoisier. Madame Lavoisier is looking at us, the audience, while Monsieur Lavoisier is looking at Madame.
