The paint industry is no stranger to environmental concerns. Paint manufacturers continue to develop paints with low or no VOCs, low odor, natural pigments and low biocides, as well as hone techniques for paint manufacturing with minimal environmental impact. However, a growing environmental concern is the proper handling of leftover paint. From recycling and reusing to properly disposing leftover paint, paint stewardship programs are on the rise to deal effectively with this environmental concern. Right now, Washington, D.C.-based PaintCare is spearheading the effort to assist retailers with paint stewardship programs. According to its website, PaintCare-created by the American Coatings Association-represents paint manufacturers to plan and operate paint stewardship programs in those states that pass paint stewardship laws. At this time, six states have PaintCare programs: California, Connecticut, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont. Programs also are planned for Colorado and Maine, and ongoing discussions are taking place with New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington. Washington, D.C., has passed a paint stewardship law, so the program is headed that way too.
