While cities can be low on tree-count and grassy knolls, they sometimes offer easy access for car-free pedestrians and cyclists, who, in turn, use gasoline at lower rates than more rural dwellers. Even so, urban environments aren't necessarily the ones that first come to mind when thinking about sustainabil-ity. Yet city-based universities, like their more pastoral counterparts, are becoming more environmentally conscientious as they begin to appreciate the impact their institutions have on their (densely populated) locales. Sustainability: The Journal of Record interviewed Jeremy Friedman, coordinator of New York University's Sustainability Task Force, about why an environmentalist would choose a city school in the first place, the unique challenges facing urban-based institutions, and how student-catalyzed collaborative—not combative—efforts can accelerate sustainable development.
