Four experts discuss the impetus behind their green residence hall projects and best practices—from changing behavior to how the angle of a building affects energy cost. Sustainability: The Journal of Record (SJoR): Is there a case for residence halls being the deepest green buildings on the university campus? Ron van der Veen: Part of the reason I am in architecture is because I have always been really interested in how the built environment can encourage and affect human behavior. Recently, I wasworking with Norb Dunkel—he is a past president of the Association for College and University Housing Officials— and he was talking about how student housing also needs to prepare students for post-academic life and living. We have an opportunity withthese very deep green projects to help shape tomorrows leaders and how they live in and interact with the built environment.
