Most of us in the environmental sphere have planted a tree, saved a tree, or, on occasion, hugged one, but not many have had much opportunity to recycle one. Turns out there's abandoned wood just about everywhere—whether it's charred remains from forest fires, trees downed during hurricanes or tornados, timber drowned in floods, or trunks that sank during their journey down rivers from forest to mill. Sustainability: The Journal of Record Managing Editor Lori Tripoli talked to Thorn Labrie, president of Auburn Enterprises, about how technology can put such "victimized" wood to good use, if there's potential for contaminated wood to be cleaned, and whether the escalating price of oil will inspire the logging industry to improve its wood recovery efforts.
