Correlation between the sizes of polypropylene bags and the yield of Pleurotus ostreatus.

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of different sizes (7 x 14, 6 x 12, 8 x 12, and 9 x 14 inches) of polypropylene bags on the yield of oyster mushroom (P. ostreatus). Spawn running, pinhead, fruiting body formation, and yield of oyster mushroom were determined using cotton waste as substrate, supplemented with lime and wheat bran, each at 4%. The 8 x 12 and 9 x 14 inches bag sizes significantly affected the yield. The fast spawn running at 30 days was observed in the 8 x 12 inches bag size. The pinhead formation was also maximum (48.8) in the 8 x 12 inches bag size. The maximum number (15.4) of mature mushrooms was obtained in the 7 x 14 inches bag size. The total yield was maximum (69.2 g) in the 6 x 12 inches bag size.
