It is an hour's drive south of Seattle to Orting, traveling from city to town, until the last shopping mall is miles back and milk cows and horses look up to see the few cars that happen by. How could a garden imbued with a Japanese spirit and a decidedly modernist Northwest twist be way out here? Especially one seemingly a stone's throw from Mount ainier, the glacier-wrapped symbol of Vashington state. How could this garden, eveloped in three distinct phases using three ivergent styles, nurture such harmony? According to its creators, lone and Emmott Chase, their verdant, four and one-half acre garden began with one simple goal: to create beauty in natural surroundings.
