Green light for green chemistry

THE European Commission has approved a French state package aid worth ?43m for green chemistry project lEED.In 2013, France notified the EU of its plans to grant extensive aid to a public private partnership that aims to develop bio-plastics and bio-paints. The "Institute of Excellence in the Field of Low-Carbon Energy" (IEED) is managed by the French Institute of Agro-Based Materials (Institut Frangais des Materiaux Agro-Sources, IFMAS). The underlying technology relies on starch rather than petroleum. Now, the European Commission (EC) concluded that the aid in form of a grant and a capital injection is in line with EU rules. The EC felt that the project would "help achieve EU targets in the area of science and the environment without unduly distorting competition in the European internal market".
