Buying local wasn't always such a novelty. Rather, in the eras before trains, planes and shipping containers crisscrossed the globe, it was a necessity. Today, however, knowing the people who make or sell the products you buy and keeping dollars within your community has become trendy. And fortunately for independent retailers, it's a trend that continues to ascend. Among independent retailers, sales increased 5.1 percent in 2014, versus 2.3 percent in 2013, according to the 2015 Independent Business Survey.
