Computational fluid dynamics is a field in fluid mechanics in which the partial differential equations (PDEs) which describe fluid flow, namely the Navier-Stokes equations, are used to compute flowfields of interest. One of the cornerstones of CFD is the fact that computers are discrete machines of finite precision and therefore the Navier-Stokes equations cannot be represented analytically. Instead the equations are discretized on a mesh/grid and solved in their discrete form. The discretization of PDEs is performed via the judicious application of the Taylor series expansion. That is, a set of truncated Taylor series represents the function space of the solution to the equations of interest, most often Navier-Stokes or Euler equations.
