After treatment with fluorescent dyes, the physiological changes in a part of the total population of microorganisms were quantified using a flow cytometer, allowing conclusions to be drawn with regard to the later reduction of product formation and/or the distribution of undesirable by-products in processes with recombinant microorganisms. To a large extent, the potential of flow cytometry experimentally demonstrated here has not been fully exploited in the monitoring and optimisation of biotechnological production processes.
