Hydroxyethyl cellulose as versatile thickener for emulsion paints and the influence of the molecular weight on paint properties

Since the early days of the development of architectural emulsion paints in the first half of the 20th century, water-soluble thickeners have been used extensively to induce the desired rheological properties to these water-based coatings. Cellulose ehers have been introduced in the earl;y fifties as paint thickeners and are still widely used because they show some interesting properties and have an overall good balance of properties for this application.
