Aqueous HF promotes the translactonization of silyloxy beta-lactones into beta-hydroxy or alpha,beta-unsaturated gamma- and delta-lactones. The reaction is studied from a theoretical point of view and applied to the racemic synthesis of two natural bioactive delta-lactones. [References: 52]
