Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, IL (309-681-6344) have come up with a novel use for dried distillers grains (DDGs). The researchers at the ARS facility have shown that DDGs can be processed to make a nearly 100% biodegradable kitty litter. Cat litter is a huge market in the United States, which has more than 95 million pet cats, according to the American Pet Products Association. Most of those cats are kept indoors, where litter boxes containing some type of absorbent material are needed for the 1.18 million metric tons of fecal material produced annually by cats.
