Heidelberg,with its long-standing academic history and its central location in Europe,offered an ideal place for this endeavour.Being home to Germany's oldest university,the German Cancer Research Centre(DKFZ),several Max Planck Institutes and maintaining ties to the pharmaceutical industry in nearby Mannheim and Darmstadt,Heidelberg provided the necessary infrastructure and invaluable academic,institutional and industrial networks.
