Iodine has been shown to be a general promoter for the activation of 'armed' glycosyl donors in glycosylation reactions. Donors that can be activated include: thio-orthoesters, glycosylsulfoxides, selenides, phosphites and imidates, and pentenyl glycosides. [References: 26]
