A case of a confusional arousal arising from REM sleep

Confusional arousals are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnias typically occurring in slow wave sleep and generally seen in early childhood [1,3.4], and are characterized by mental confusion or confusional behavior occurring during or following arousal from sleep [2]. They may be triggered by sleep related respiratory events [2]. However, they are only rarely known to occur during REM sleep [4]. We herein describe a case of a confusional arousal arising during REM sleep, not induced by a respiratory event.
