The authors have developed a syn-thetically flexible way to convert commerciallyavailable cyanine dyes into near-infrared uracilederivatives in a single step. The compounds dem-onstrate a clear change in fluorescence withchanging pH and are presented as potential fluo-rescent pH-sensitive probes.
